The Complete Guide To HR Problems & How To Solve Them

It does not matter what type of business you run, your employees play a monumental role. Where would you be if you did not have a great team behind you, putting in those all-important hours of graft every day?  A lot of business owners are guilty of taking their employees for granted. Yes, you have worked hard to build this amazing business, but you need people to fulfill the roles you have established and to do their job effectively. This is why you need to take HR very seriously and have a plan to handle HR problems that arise.

Of course, if you are not prepared and you do not have the correct contracts in place, you can also find that HR problems can come back to bite you in the end as well. We have seen plenty of issues whereby unhappy employees have left a firm and they have enacted revenge. This is the last thing you want to deal with as a business owner.

With that in mind, in this blog post, we are going to provide you with great insight into some of the most common HR issues experienced today, as well as giving you our advice and suggestions on how to solve these problems. So, continue reading to discover everything you need to know.

Recruitment

There is only one place to start, and this is by discussing recruitment. After all, you need to make sure you have the best employees working for your firm, to begin with, right?

The truth is that recruitment is something a lot of business owners struggle with today. There are a number of reasons why this is the case. However, it often comes down to the fact that those who are tasked with recruiting new people for the business are not trained in recruitment.

This can cause a whole host of problems. It may mean that your job descriptions are boring and simply read like they have been copied and pasted from elsewhere. It can mean that incorrect questions are being asked during the interview stage.

This is why you need to make sure that you get your recruitment approach mastered. There are lots of ways of going about this. Having two people present during the interview is important so you can see different perspectives. You may also want to consider working with a specialist recruitment firm that can help you with everything from job descriptions to vetting candidates.

Retention

It is one thing to find the best employees for your business but you then need to hold onto them. There have been many different studies that have taken a look at the different reasons why people leave their place of employment today. The reasons vary considerably.

For a lot of people, they feel like they are working in dead-end roles and that there are no opportunities for progression. People want to feel like they are developing their skills and capabilities. They also want to know that they are going to have the chance to be promoted in the future. If you cannot provide them with this, it is likely that they will look elsewhere for better opportunities.

Aside from this, it is important to make sure that your business offers a positive place of work and that everyone feels happy and content in the workplace. Recognizing the efforts of your staff members can go a very long way too. After all, no one likes to feel like they are being overlooked!

Aside from this, do not underestimate how much of a difference it can make to simply ask your staff members what you could be doing better. Find out if there are any pain points that are causing real frustration in the workplace. This shows that you care about what your workers think and feel, and that you are dedicated to improving the work environment and ensuring it is as good as possible.

Diversity and discrimination

It is certainly sad that we need to incorporate a section on diversity and discrimination when it comes to HR problems. However, this is one of the most serious and severe issues within the workplace today, and it is, unfortunately, the case that there is discrimination going on in many businesses around the country and that there is also a clear lack of diversity as well.

When a problem comes up in regard to discrimination, this is not something you can simply brush under the carpet. You need to take it very seriously. First and foremost, this is vital for the person who has been discriminated against. Secondly, it is also critical for the sake of your business and your own reputation as well.

When it comes to something like discrimination, it can be easy to assume that it is common sense and everyone knows that discrimination is unacceptable. However, the last thing you want is for there to be gray areas and for people to feel like they have a chance to talk their way out of the situation. This is why we highly recommend that you create a policy that people can refer to.

You should also make sure that you are aware of all of the laws surrounding recruitment, discrimination, and diversity. You can see how to do legal research in 3 steps so that you can do this effectively.

Health and safety

In addition to the different areas that we have discussed so far, another important HR issue that we need to think about carefully is health and safety. We cannot deny the fact that health and safety can be a great source of frustration for a lot of company owners today, especially for business owners working in sectors whereby it can feel like they have 30 different pieces of legislation that they need to implement!

No matter how confusing or frustrating it is, though, you simply cannot afford to cut corners when it comes to health and safety. It is compulsory to make sure you have a health and safety policy in place. You must keep supporting documents that you have used to put this health and safety policy together, as this will ensure that all workers know why the rules you have implemented have been enforced. An accident book is also critical so that any accidents, injuries, or illnesses in the workplace can be recorded.

Health and safety is certainly not an area whereby you can afford any mishaps. This is why a lot of businesses make the sensible move to consult an expert for help with health and safety laws, as they are changing all of the time and it is your responsibility to keep up to date with everything that is going on. If it is found that you have not complied with the laws that are in place, you could find yourself in a whole world of trouble.

Productivity

On a final note, we must assess the issue of productivity, which is a huge HR problem. At the end of the day, your business is not going to perform to the level you need it to perform if your workforce is not productive.

Nevertheless, rather than shouting at everyone and simply telling them that they need to work harder, you need to get to the bottom of why this lack of productivity has happened. Often, there are underlying issues that are not always evident.

For example, it could be that your employees are being directed to focus on the wrong tasks. Often, we see that workers are spending time on non-core activities, and this is why there is a problem with productivity.

In other cases, it is the business processes that are to blame. Is there something wrong with the procedures that everyone is following? Could it be that you are following an inefficient approach and it is taking way too long for certain tasks to be completed? This is another issue we see happen a lot.

Of course, it could be that your employees are not feeling motivated and that engagement levels have dropped. Again, this does not mean that your employees simply are not putting in the effort. You need to figure out what has caused this lack of motivation so that you can get to the bottom of it and make the changes that are needed. For example, it could be that your employees would benefit from a team-building exercise or that there has been some sort of communication breakdown.

This merely scratches the surface regarding some of the most common HR problems that businesses face today. We hope that this has helped you to get a better understanding of some of the challenges you face and how you can deal with them effectively. We know that it can be very challenging when it comes to dealing with matters like health and safety and recruitment. However, these are critical areas of your business that require a lot of your attention and resources. You certainly cannot afford to cut corners here, as it can result in many other areas of your business collapsing in the process.
