DIY SEO

As of 2016, 15% of people bought an item online once per week and 28% bought at least a few times per month.

It’s impossible to deny the power of eCommerce. With billions of dollars in sales, the world of online retail gives anyone the ability to create a profitable store.

The best advantage you can give your online shop is a thorough search engine optimization (SEO) strategy. Understandably, you might be unfamiliar with SEO standards and practices.

Don’t worry, you don’t need a degree in marketing to improve your site’s rankings. You can start by reading up on these DIY SEO tips!

Finding Keywords

Even if you’re unfamiliar with SEO for the most part, you probably know that the essence of search optimization comes from keyword rankings. Finding the perfect keyword is tougher than it looks.

It all comes down to research and lots of it. Target relevant keywords that directly relate to the products you’re selling. The more specific you can get, the better.

As you begin researching, remember that SEO is a living, breathing phenomenon that changes over time. As a result, the keywords you’ve found success with before might not prove as successful now.

Likewise, tracking keywords can be time-consuming, which is why some companies opt to outsource to eCommerce SEO services.

Security Standards

Search engine crawlers are programmed to act like your customers. Therefore, you can expect a penalty if a crawler senses that your site is unsecured and unsafe.

To keep your customers’ data secure, enable Hypertext Transport Protocol Security, or HTTPS, on your site. Note that this is different than a standard HTTP site.

Think of it this way: An HTTP site is like a house with an open, unlocked door. Anyone can wander in at any time and take anything. An HTTPS site is like a home with a closed, locked door and security system.

HTTPS sites utilize encryption to secure the exchange of data between your customer and your web page.

Aside from simply being a smart investment, Google tends to favor HTTPS sites and give them a slight boost, so you can get rewarded just for keeping your customers safe.

Marvelous Metadata

Metadata is a fancier way of saying data about your site’s data.

Though retooling your metadata might sound like a chore, it’s pretty easy, especially if you’re using an eCommerce platform like Shopify or BigCommerce, which allows you to add meta tags through their CMS.

So what does all of this mean for you?

It means that you’ll want to start adding information to anything and everything you upload. Whenever possible, include keywords.

If you’re a boutique specializing in Gucci bags and you’re uploading new photos, you’d want to include the brand name and exact product description. When a user searches for the bag, Google can pull from your metadata and make your site one of the search results.
