VR headsets aren’t cheap. There’s certainly a high barrier to entry if you want to play VR games than there is for playing normal games on your flatscreen TV or monitor. You have to spend an extra couple hundred bucks to get a VR headset on top of what you already spent getting the gaming console or assembling your PC.
But these new VR games are something else entirely. Whether it is the movement, emotional moments or the jump scares like in Half-Life: Alyx, you cannot get the same experience on a flatscreen TV. It just isn’t possible. The immersive experience you get with VR headsets is next level.
And the great thing about this is, that this is just the beginning. It will start to look more realistic and who knows, one day we might have an entire VR world that wouldn’t be much different than the real world we live in.
Maybe a day will come where people won’t be able to differentiate between what is real and what isn’t.
But, now is not the time to dive into the conspiracy theories. This article is all about the best VR games you can play for free. Because let’s be honest, you have already spent so much money on setting these things up.
You don’t want to spend an extra $60-100 to buy your first VR game. You want to test it out on free games and see how it is.
And for that exact reason, here’s an in-depth rundown on the best VR games you can play for free on almost any headset (HTC Vive, Oculus Rift, Playstation VR).
Epic Roller Coasters (Oculus Rift)
It is one of the top free games out there. You’ll get to experience the thrill of riding a rollercoaster through your VR headset.
And you know what the best part about it will be?
You won’t have to worry about motion sickness or someone else being sick after the ride.
You can find this game on the Oculus storefront and start playing right away.
There’s a multiplayer option as well to top it off. So if you and your friends set up your VR gaming together, you can enjoy this game in multiplayer mode.
This is the next best thing to the real experience. You get to ride a fun rollercoaster that has a shooter mode as well while social distancing.
If you just bought an Oculus Quest 2, we got you covered for that as well. AR/VR Tips has an in-depth list of some of the best FREE oculus quest games available right now. Check it out.
Robo Recall (Oculus Rift)
Some of you might think that because this game is available for free, it might not be that good.
You’d be dead wrong about that my friend.
Robo Recall is absolutely crazy! No literally, you’ll have so much fun fragging those robots in VR you have no idea.
Do keep in mind that this game is developed by Epic Games and they are obviously using their engine which is known to push the graphics cards to its limits.
So, for those of you who subscribe to the PC master race, make sure you have proper cooling in your systems to avoid burning out your GPU’s. Or at least make sure that you turn on the air conditioning in your room so your room temperature is cooler.
Besides that, there’s nothing to worry about.
This is the one game that you HAVE to download.
Accounting (HTC Vive)
Don’t let the name of this game throw you off. It is definitely more interesting than what it sounds like. You won’t be filing any tax returns or doing any bookkeeping, I swear
The name doesn’t give it away, but this game is NSFW. I’m not implying that you can play VR games at work. But who knows, these days almost everyone is working from home, so you might as well give this one a shot.
It is an adventure game that will sometimes ask you to grab strange things in a not so obvious way. You’ll have to play it to find out.
But it is a strange game developed by the co-creator of Rick and Morty. So if you are someone who loves that show’s humor, you will love this game.
That’s all I can say for now.
Google Earth (HTC Vive)
Obviously, this isn’t a game. But we all played around with Google Earth when we were young didn’t we? Or am I just showing my age right now?
Using Google Earth in VR is a completely different experience though. When you zoom out or zoom in for the first time, you’ll realize how interactive it is. Not only that, when you zoom all the way out for the first time, you’ll notice how beautiful this blue marble that we live on really is.
Now might be the best time to see if you have a fear of heights. You can go to the alps and look down and see if your legs slip or if you get that weird feeling in your stomach.
Don’t worry though, if you feel sick or if it frightens you too much you can just remove the headset. You won’t really be stuck in the alps.
Star Wars: Battlefront (PSVR)
This isn’t exactly a game and it is also isn’t entirely free.
It is the Battlefront VR mission and you will have to own Star Wars: Battlefront. This mission will come as a free DLC with your copy.
Sorry if you felt like I pulled a fast one on you. But buying this game is worth it.
Ever wanted to feel what it would be like to be in an intergalactic space war? Well, now you can.
In this short game, you will be piloting an X-Wing.
And if that wasn’t enough, you’ll also get to experience some incredibly cool visuals that will push your PlayStation 4 to its limits. And for a good thing.
I don’t think there’s any other game that offers similar visuals like this one. Yes, they are that good. At least that’s what I think.
